Patricia Smith

Patricia Smith, of Coconut Creek, Florida, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, at the age of 65.

Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, Patricia—known affectionately as Patty—was a vibrant and passionate educator whose legacy endures in the lives of countless students and colleagues.

Patty served as an adjunct professor of History and English at Broward College and Palm Beach College, and also worked as a part-time lab assistant at Broward College’s North Campus Academic Success Center. Her commitment to education was matched by her academic achievements: she earned an Associate of Arts from Broward Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in History from Florida Atlantic University, and two Master of Arts degrees—in History and English—from Southern New Hampshire University.

A gifted writer, Patty authored two books, Kayla’s Story and One Thousand Days, and wrote and published two plays, The Park Bench and Everybody’s Playing the Game. Her creative spirit and intellectual curiosity were hallmarks of her teaching and personal life.

Patty was a devoted Florida sports fan, especially of her beloved Panthers hockey team, attending games long before their championship seasons. She had a deep affection for animals, always sharing her home with cherished canine and feline companions.

She was preceded in death by her loving partner of many years, Karen Lee, and by her parents, Robert and Catherine (Riordan) Smith. Patty is survived by her beloved sister, Roberta (Melody Smith) Bergeron; her brother-in-law, Dennis Bergeron; several adored nieces and nephews; and several cherished grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Patty will be remembered for her exuberant wit, her unwavering dedication to her students, and the joy she brought to every classroom and conversation.
