Thomas "Tom" Patrick Powers
September 2, 2023
Thomas (Tom) Patrick Powers passed away at home surrounded by family and the comfort and support of many friends. He bravely fought cancer for the past 2 ½ years with a strong faith, a determined outlook, and a dedicated medical and hospice team.
Tom was born in Yonkers, New York, on January 27, 1957, the third of six children of Thomas and Jane Powers. He was raised in Millbrook, New York, and he was a proud graduate and supporter of Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Tom joined the Arizona Department of Public Safety in 1980, serving primarily as a narcotics agent focusing on the southern border and distribution routes. During his 21-year career, he served as president of the Arizona Highway Patrol Association and successfully led the fight for an improved and equitable pension system for the law enforcement officers and retirees of the Department. The adopted agreement often served as a model for law enforcement organizations in other states.
In 2001, following a career opportunity for his wife Teresa, Tom and his family moved to Coral Springs, Florida, where he was very active in area politics. He served for six years on the Coral Springs City Commission, was a candidate for mayor in 2014, and began serving as Chairperson for the Broward Republican Executive Committee in 2020. In that role, he gained the respect of many local, state, and federal public officials for his dedication, fairness, and focus on the larger community.
Tom is survived by his wife Teresa, his daughter Alexis, his sons Brendon and Danny (Brooke), and his grandchildren Alexander, Colton, and Garrett, all of whom mirror the best of his gifts and personality. Tom is also survived by his brothers Jim (Nancy) and John and his nieces and nephews who also enjoyed his humor, spirit, and company. He was predeceased by his sisters Susan, Pamela, and Jane.
He will be remembered for a life well lived in service to others.
